Operation Write Home ......

I first learned of Operation Write Home almost two years ago, when I stumbled into a Memorial Day Bloghop. Since I love creating cards, and often have lots of leftovers after participating in challenges, sketches, etc., I began creating cards for OWH on a more regular basis.

OWH provides military personnel with handmade only cards, to help encourage contact with family and friends at home. The OWH blog, OWH Stars and Stamps, regularly posts sketches, challenges for cardmakers, along with notes and sometimes video from the military personnel who receive and use these cards.

Sympathy cards... one of the toughest for me to create due to the very nature of the card. I try to make them simple yet elegant. How about you? I was very pleased with the end result of this card, but it certainly didn't make having to send it to a friend any easier....

We're here in 2010! Wow, time flies when you're having fun! What are your crafting resolutions? Mine are: to use more stash, to send more cards (why make them if you don't share them right?), and to update my blog more often (several friends & family have been asking about this). I think these are all doable goals.

"Tis the Hero" challenge - Fa la la la la! It's almost Christmastime at Cards For Heros! That means it's time for a challenge!!

The challenge runs from Sept 1 - Oct 15th; note that our deadline for holiday cards is Nov 1, but early birds get the benefit of qualifying for one of our prizes! Last year we mailed 35,000 cards during Sept through Nov, how many will we get out to our heroes this year??

PRIZES! We have some stamp sets and other goodies to share - we'll be showing photos on the Homefront Blog soon!

Note: This year we'll also count non-Christmassy cards - last year we had lots of Christmas ones, but had no birthday or love cards, and a few of our contacts missed getting those! So - of course the heaviest emphasis is on holiday cards, but feel free to add in a few others too!

So, addition to wedding invites, shower invites, personal Christmas cards, I have taken on the challenge of making cards for CFH. I went through my stash and "gleaned" 40 or so cards, and have started making Christmas cards. These soldiers, men and women, put themselves on the line not only for us, but for the countries they are stationed in... DH and I have at least six friends and family who are in the military and stationed around the world. We have many other friends who have family in the military too. This just seems like a small way that I can show my appreication for these honorable, and brave soldiers.

Wednesday is the beginning of Gingham Girl's new challenge! The Challenge is called WORD OF the WEEK, and this week's word is "NEW". This card is based on 365 Cards, Day 162 - Super Sketchy Sunday #21.

I thought this was a fun sketch to work with.

So we got our DD moved into her "new" home. It was so nice to see her in her house, and we got most everything unpacked and put away. DH did a great job getting things hung up, both DD's and I were unpacking boxes and finding a place for everything. When I talked to DD this am, she said that she only has a few more boxes to unpack and the house is looking great!!

Today is DD's 26th birthday! I am sure that she is exhausted after the past frantic weekend, but I hope she enjoys her special day at her new home. Happy Birthday Adriane!

I'm back...

well I haven't really been gone this whole time, just really busy! We spent five days at the lake and had a great time. When we returned home, we jumped into helping my BIL build a HUGE covered area for his motorhome and DH got a job!

My DH has been laid off work for the past year. His current job was offered to him by his BF. It's not my DH's usual line of work, but he jumped in and started last Wed. Yea!!!

So, I just haven't had much time for card making.... but I did manage to squeeze in some time today for Day 169 - 365 Cards, Super Sketchy Sunday challenge #22.

You may be seeing a lot of Christmas cards for a while, I really want to get them finished up early this year!! and this may be the only card I get finished this week.

DH and I are headed up to Portland, OR to help our oldest DD and her family move into their new house! They've been living in a third floor apartment for the past 2.5 years and are so ready for an actual house. It has three bedrooms, which means no more sleeping on the livingroom floor!! ;) So, I'll be seeing you when I see you!!

At 365 Cards it's Day 157 - Imagine This: Sunflowers ~ Today's challenge is all about sunflowers. It's not necessary that you have a sunflower on your card, as long as it is inspired by a sunflower.

I created this card for BF's daughter who is getting married in a few weeks... I saw a card like this at Split Coast Stampers and just thought it was too cute!

This card is 4" x 9.25". I freehanded the "dress" portion and then used an EK Success corner round punch with the guide removed to create the scallops. The dress paper is from a speciality white paper pack from Costco a couple of years ago.

Day 154 at 365 Cards! Planes, trains, and automobiles... Today's challenge is all about modes of transportation. Anything goes as long as you include a plane, train, or automobile (and I think technically a bicycle is a mode of transportation, so it should count) on your card.

Here's my card... I have to say I am not happy with it... I just couldn't get things to work today... KWIM? I did cut out the larger plane and layer it onto the upper large plane, and the row of flying planes across the center are a sticker that matched this paper.

I received this image as a part of an RAK... I can not remember who was so gracious to share.... but I thought it was a great image for this challenge!!

Update: it was 108 degrees here again today.. and our AC unit went out!!! I was at work when DH called... he went out and found another one (the last one in stock and Walmart was already sold out!) and got it installed and running by the time I got home!! Yay for DH!!! He's one handy guy!!

Today's challenge at 365 Cards - Day 150 is called an "Eye" for an "I" because I want you to substitute one word that sounds like another (like ewe for you), but has a different meaning - and use it in your sentiment. I believe they call this a homophone (I even Googled it!), and I've seen them used on stamps, rub-ons, and stickers, so there are lots to choose from. And when in doubt, computer-generated always works.

Here's my card!!! How've you bean (been)? I tell ya.. I was completely brain dead on this one, and this was the best I could come up with! I do hope the been / bean works for this challenge....

BTW - How've I bean, you ask??? HOT - we broke a record here in good ole' Grants Pass, OR, 108 degrees today!!!! Way, way too hot for me... I'm sure that I am melting even as I type this.... I hope it's cooler where you are today....

Try a Technique: Sponging

It is now Day 149 at 365 Cards. Today's challenge is all about Sponging. I don't care how you use it, just use the sponging technique on your card.

It doesn't show up well in this photo, but I sponged all around the circle using a ColorBox Pigment Brush Pad. I also sponged onto the card base so that it would show through the border punch. I hadn't tried any sponging before this challenge, but I really like the affect!

I raised up the train with thick foam adhesive and the CB zoo animals with a thin foam adhesive, and added Glossy Accents to the clouds. This has to be the most dimensional card I've ever made... I think my DGS will love it!

Sympathy cards, the one of the toughest types of cards to make.... but that was today's challenge at 365 Cards.

Day 143 - Keep it to Yourself: Sympathy ~ "This Keep it to Yourself challenge is to create a Sympathy card. It's difficult to convey the message without putting the sentiment on the front, but that's what I'm asking you to do. HOWEVER, the message CAN be on the inside. The idea is to create an appropriate card for this type of situation, which is often difficult anyway."

I am very pleased with how this card turned out. I punched the dragonfly twice and layered it with a piece of adhesive foam.

My youngest DD had been after me forever to read these books... frankly, I just wasn't interested. One day DD brought the book to work and asked me one more time to please read it. So I did, and then the second and then the third... Friends thought I fell off the face of the earth. I read all three books in 4 and a half days... wow. I still have not seen the movie... I don't know if I ever will. I don't think I've ever seen a movie based on a favorite book of mine turn out well.... KWIM?

So at 365 Cards, today's challenge is Day 142 - Movie Monday. "Let the Twilight movie inspire your card. Use a black card base or black background, patterned paper where the dominant color is red, and embellish with either glitter or rhinestones. Anything else goes."

Here is my Twilight inspired card. For my patterned paper, I ran black Bazzill through my Cuttlebug Swirls embossing folder. I painted the raised swirls with Making Memories Hollyberry paint.

Day 139 - Try a Technique at 365 Cards. Use the paper piercing technique to create a pattern on your card. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just something to add to the overall appearance of your card.

I used an All My Memories piercing template for the pierced arch at the top of my card and the circle outline around the daisies. I really like the effect of this around the daisies... I'll have to remember this one!

Day 137 - I'm in a Bind at 365 Cards. Today, the challenge is to bind two pieces of something (card stock, plastic, etc.) to create a card. For example, use a hole punch and then attach using metal rings or yarn.

This one took a bit of doing (it was definitely a challenge for me).... I've had these MM hinges forever and what a great challenge to use them on this card!

Hitting yard sales on a Friday and or Saturday morning has long been a tradition (when it fits into our schedule) in our family. This summer DH and I have been out about twice a month or so.

This weekend we decided to go on Friday morning. I wake up first (always have) grab a shower, get dressed and wake up DH. We head out to grab me a coffee (first things first) at the River Rock Cafe and then we hit the sales!! Friday morning was beautiful and although we only found a few things, it seems like we picked up something at every sale we stopped at.

I was looking through the newspaper on Friday night and one sale caught my eye, "lots of scrapbooking items". I knew I was headed over there first thing in the morning! They had a lot of great stuff!! Here's my "haul" from this weekend's yard sales:

I spent $15.00 total for all this great stuff!!!

Here it is... my very first cup of coffee, in my favorite coffee mug, from my new Keurig... doesn't it smell wonderful?
It is everything I have heard about. I got up, went to the kitchen, select a K-cup (French Vanilla this morning), popped it into the Keurig and wah lah, in about 60 seconds... I have HOT (I love my coffee HOT, even when it is 100 degrees outside), delicious coffee.

I took two sips, then went outside to snap a photo for all of you!!!

If you are considering one of these coffee makers, I definitely give it a thumbs up!!

My coffee mug has writing on it which says, "Pick more flowers, watch more sunsets" ~ please do.

Coffee is my life... coffee is my blood type... coffee is very important to me. Of course if you know anything at all about me, you know how true this is. I love coffee. So many "good" things in my life have to be limited or eliminated. Coffee is my friend....

This is my coffee maker... it has been a faithful, loyal coffee maker for many years.

But...... today DH and I were garage saleing and I found a Keurig coffee maker. I picked it up, I fondled it, the owner of the garage sale quoted me a price.... it was really too much. I asked if I could plug it in as the display looked "cloudy". She agreed. The display looked just fine... it was really too much money... for a garage sale.

DH, who does not drink coffee, asked me what's up with the coffee maker? I explained that THIS Keurig coffee maker has excellent reviews, makes the most awesome coffee and I had decided to ask for one for Christmas this year... he said "oh." ??? I told him that this coffee maker is awfully expensive, but I really would like one, and I could save a lot of money buying the yard sale one... he said "oh." hmmmm. We left the Keurig coffee maker behind.

DH had to go to Medford to do some work this afternoon. Medford is twice as big as Grants Pass, where we live, and has awesome shopping opportunities. I get down there about once a month...

Following dinner DH disappears and then reappears with this......

WOOHOO! Did you hear me, WOOHOO!!! No way? Really? You bought this for me? Oh my gosh I cannot believe it....!!!! Good-bye old coffee maker, friend, loyal brewer of my favorite beverage... hello Keurig!!!

I cannot wait for tomorrow morning.... my first cup o Joe....

DH has declared this a "belated" Mother's Day gift. I think it's love..... he didn't want me to have the "used" coffee maker... he thought I deserved a new one all for me.

I'll let you know about that first cup tomorrow morning....

I think he loves me, really, really loves me.... {sigh} :)

Ho, ho, ho.... well I am back on my Christmas card making streak! I just finished up these five for the Christmas Cards All Year 'Round challenge. The challenge for this month is to create a Christmas card using the colors RED, WHITE and BLUE!!!!!

I started off very unsure of how to use Red, White & Blue on Christmas cards, but I was inspired by a birthday card I received from a very good friend!!

Another challenge from 365 Cards! Day 129 - You have me in Stitches!! Stitch an image on your card. Not just around the outside of the card, but an actual image. A flourish DOES count, since these are typically quite detailed.

July 5, 2006 ~ Ethan was born. Two and a half weeks early, but perfect in every way!

How do you ever explain the love you have for a grandchild.... I still don't know, but if you don't have one (a grandchild), you so have to get one!!!

This birthday card is for our DGS who will celebrate his third birthday on July 5th! He loves his trains and I really wanted to have one on his card. That is when I discovered that I have no train images! So I went to the computer and found/created this one. It is from a clipart package and I resized and recolored it for this card.

365 Cards; Day 123 - White Space - I am directing all the decorations to the blacked-out areas in the following image. That means absolutely NOTHING in the white space!!

This one was tough... white space, it reminds me of when the TV would go off the air and you'd get "white noise". It's just so empty...

I am hoping I have followed the directions.... it's a little iffy on using the Cuttlebug embossing folder I think.... but I love this card!!

The Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, "Why did you just do that? That guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!"

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck."

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage -- frustration, anger, disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.

Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Watering and Flowers

We still don't have a yard, but I do have a few plants outside that need occasional watering. While Ethan has been with us I have discovered that he is fascinated with watering the plants! It's gotten warm again this week, so we needed to do some watering...

He takes his job very seriously.....

and makes sure all the plants get a drink of water...

Later he and Aunt Heather went for a walk down to our mailbox... he brought me this beautiful bouquet of flowers.... I love this kid!!
